About Merry Robertson

I developed an interest in art at an early age; three brothers meant I had to find ways to entertain myself. As a teenager I attended James Street Art Department, Perth Technical College, in Perth Western Australia for 3 years full time. There I studied Graphic Design which, in those days, consisted of developing both fine art and graphic art skills. Drawing every day, and learning about printmaking, photography and typography (another favourite addition to many of my artworks) was heaven!

I was fortunate to be offered a position with a graphic design studio before I completed my Diploma of Graphic Design, so took the job and completed the diploma at the same time. This wonderful experience cemented my interest in not only making art a permanent part of my life, but in the whole area of strategic marketing and the role great design plays in communication.

Over the next forty years art has infiltrated, driven and inspired my every move. From designing promotions for the recreation industry and creating hundreds of logos and branding strategies, to making sure my slide presentations that accompany my professional speaking and training business were colourful and memorable. During this time I have also produced works for sale and entered competitions and exhibitions.

A great overview

As a participant in Merry’s drawing classes at the 2019 Albany Summer School, I couldn’t have asked for more! We learnt the essential skills that support all forms of art, and while I have some art experience, it was great to get back to the basics and refine my skills. I didn’t realise that I had become a bit rusty, making Merry’s classes the boost my art career needed.

I have attended a number of Merry’s art education workshops and am always impressed by her depth of knowledge. Her practical approach means improving my own art practice is easy to understand and apply.

I collaborated with Merry to produce my book ‘Reflections’. The work she put in over the process of a year was amazing. I loved her interpretive linocut artworks that are spread throughout the book. Without her guidance and professionalism my dream of having my own published book would not have been realised.

I have known a Merry as an artist for many years and collected a number of her pieces. Her work is unique, affordable and brings me much pleasure.
